Cyclone Idai – news from on the ground

A parishioner contacted Fr William Kiowi in Mozambique whom many will remember from his time with us at St Peter’s. In his reply he said:

“Hi Lesley. Yes the situation is not good. In my parish of Sao Miguel de Cuamba many houses fell down mainly those starched houses and one of our catholic communities called Nossa Senhora Aparecida is giving accommodation to more than 70 families. I have visited the victims twice carrying a sack of rice and oil for cooking. The Capuchin Sisters also belong to the same community tried to help with maize but it is not enough, the government too is giving something little but things are not easy. In the church I tried to mobilize those who have a little bit of maize so that they could give a hand to the victims but the situation is not easy. Pray for us so that this time may pass. Greetings to all parishioners of St. Peter in Chains. Fr. William Kiowi”

The UK Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), of which CAFOD is part, has launched an appeal for the 2.6 million affected by the cyclone that swept through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. We would ask you to pray for those affected and donate what you can at https://www.dec.org.uk/ or using the box marked Cyclone Idai Appeal at the back of church. Thank you.

Lent 2019

Ecumenical Stations of the Cross – Will take place at 7:30pm, 29th March Holy Innocents Tottenham Lane, 5th April St Mary with St George, Hornsey.

Lent Family Fast Day – Thank you – to all those who gave last weekend raising, so far, over £1,100 including £132 from the Frugal Supper. You can still hand in donations at the Presbytery.

Lent 2019 Faith-sharing Groups– “Rejoice and be Glad” – You can still join a group re-discovering a profound and personal sense of being loved and of being called to love, as joyful missionary disciples of Jesus Christ. Speak to Fr Sean or email the parish office stroudgreen@rcdow.org.uk. Copies of the booklet are available on the newspaper stand priced £3.

Studying the Scripture – One good Lenten practice is Bible reading, and for those who wish to do so, a reminder that there are notes by our own scripture scholar Joan Griffith (and some good illustrations for meditation) on the parish website for the Sunday readings each week.

Grow in intimacy with God this Lent – A parishioner has trained as a Spiritual Director and is available to accompany individuals who wish to explore their relationship with God. Sessions are donation only and offer an opportunity to help you draw out a deeper relationship with God, to help you discern where God is at work in your life and to help you identify the blocks to becoming closer to God. Please contact Fr Sean for more details.

Cardinal’s Lenten Appeal 2019 – – The Cardinal’s Appeal funds initiatives in parishes, schools and charities in the three mission areas of: Marriage and Family Life, Youth and Evangelisation and the Church’s Service in Society, where, this year, he has launched a new programme focusing on the food poverty that affects so many. Much of this poverty remains hidden. Many use foodbanks even though there is a wage earner in the family. Please take a donation leaflet as you leave Mass today. In addition, to find out about volunteering opportunities, visit CardinalsLentenAppeal.org.uk. In the words of Cardinal Nichols: “I hope this Appeal offers you and your family one way in which to observe Lent and to grow in the richness of our response to God’s blessings of life and faith.” You can donate to the appeal using the box marked ‘Cardinal’s Appeal’ at the back of church.

Ann O’Grady RIP

A big thank you to everyone who helped us prepare for Christmas in any way – cleaning, decorating the church, preparing the Crib, serving, ushering, reading, singers and musicians, Eucharistic Ministers, bankers, the counting teams. Special thanks to our First Holy Communion children for making the lovely Christmas prayer decorations.

Thank you also for the cards and gifts as well as your generous Christmas Offerings which, with Mass and other Stipends and the annual Easter Offerings, go towards paying the priest each month.

If you have any unwanted Christmas gifts and would like to donate them to this project please hand them in to the parish office before 8th.

A prayer for our earth

This is one of the two prayers with which Pope Francis concludes his encyclical, ‘Laudato Si’ (‘Be praised’), which was published this week

All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe
and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love,
that we may protect life and beauty.

Fill us with peace, that we may live
as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth,
so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives,
that we may protect the world and not prey on it,
that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts
of those who look only for gain
at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,
to be filled with awe and contemplation,
to recognize that we are profoundly united
with every creature
as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle
for justice, love and peace.

First fruits

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped at our SEEDS stall at the Crouch End Festival. We made over £600! This will go towards our new club on the first Saturday of each month for learning disabled adults, their families and friends. The next will be Saturday, 4th July at St Peter in Chains School Hall, 2-4pm. Families and carers have told us that the weekends can be very hard – and people can be left feeling very unsupported. Please come and join in, the Saturday club is open to everyone and we hope that people will feel moved to help us. With music, dance, art, crafts and refreshments but most importantly friendship and fun! Sue Hessel, Kayte Brimacombe, Mary Halliday (0777 939 4424)

St Gildas’ School Centenary Bike Ride

As many of you know, this year marks the centenary of the school’s foundation and there are a number of events planned througout the year to mark this important milestone. In addition to celebrating the history of St Gildas’ we believe that it is important to look forward and consider what needs to be done to secure the legacy of the school for future generations.

The key project we have looked to focus our fund raising efforts on this year is the school’s outside play facilities which are not meeting the needs of the children and urgently need to be upgraded.

We are making good progress in our efforts and have secured funding to replace the perimeter fencing and to demolish the now derelict perfab buildings beside the playground. This work will commence over the May half term and summer break. We therefore will be ready to commence the first phase of the upgrade works to create a dedicated multi-use games area (“MUGA”) where the old prefab buildings were over the summer. However, to do this we require further funding which is where we need your assistance.

On the weekend of 20 and 21st of June around 20 brave parents and staff from St Gildas’ and St Peter’s will undertake a c. 150 mile sponsored cycle to seek to raise the £25,000 needed to progress this playground upgrade work. The cycle will start from the St Gildas’ school in Yeovil Somerset on 20 June and end at our school on the 21 June. Many of the participants have never undertaken a long cycle before and a number have purchased their first adult bike – so this should definitely be seen as a challenge! All monies raised will go towards the playground development project and if we can rise the target amount then the planned works to create the MUGA can commence this summer. We would therefore ask people to give as generously as they can.

A dedicated fundraising site has been created so it’s very easy to donate – http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/stgildas

Gift aid will also be reclaimed from eligible donations.

Please feel free to pass on to family or friends or others you think would be interested in sponsoring the team. We hope to have a celebration at the school to welcome the cyclists back on Sunday 21st of June and we will share more details on that in the near future.

Your continued support is much appreciated.

The Centenary Team.

Here are a selection of photos from the recent charity concert in aid of Seeds

A total of £570.16 was raised towards Seeds, our new parish provision for learning disabled adults so a huge thank you to everyone who contributed. We were very grateful to violinists Duo Klier and their pupils of St.Gilda’s School, St Gilda’s school choir and director, Tom Fowkes, and everyone who made the evening such a success.
