TEST POST ONLY – Scripture notes – 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year A – 12th November 2023

Year A is winding towards its end, with the usual theme of the ‘end time’ – the Second Coming of Jesus. That dominates the reading for the next three weeks. Most years when the shops and ads are already pushing us towards celebrating Christmas, it is an effort to match the liturgy’s mood, but in 2023 with two horrifying wars, weather catastrophes, and a continued food or cost of living crisis in many places, the outlook is already ‘apocalyptic’. Our task now is to remember that this is a time for Christian hope! Continue reading TEST POST ONLY – Scripture notes – 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year A – 12th November 2023

TEST POST – Scripture notes – 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year A – 13th August 2023

In ordinary life, we mostly have to take in faith of who God is, and may only imagine what it would mean to ‘experience’ Him. At special moments, the veil of human limitation is lifted and someone receives a glimpse of what ‘eye has not seen, nor ear heard’. We have two of these moments in the readings today. Continue reading TEST POST – Scripture notes – 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year A – 13th August 2023

Test Post – Scripture notes – The Ascension of the Lord – 18th May 2023

Only Luke of the four Gospels tells details of Jesus’ leaving this world to return to the Father in eternal glory – and Luke tells it twice, first at the end of his gospel and then at the beginning of the Book of Acts, where it is a bridge between Jesus life and the history of the first days of the Church.

For those unable to attend mass on a weekday, reading the liturgy selections can be a commemoration of the Ascension. Continue reading Test Post – Scripture notes – The Ascension of the Lord – 18th May 2023

Scripture notes – 33rd Sunday of the Year, C – 13th November 2022 – TEST SITE

‘I go to prepare a place for you and then I will come again and take you to myself,’ are Jesus’ words to his disciples the night before he died. (John 14:2-3). As the church year ends this month, the liturgy focus is on the ‘last days’ and the final end of the world while we are waiting for Christ to return as he promised. Continue reading Scripture notes – 33rd Sunday of the Year, C – 13th November 2022 – TEST SITE

Scripture notes – 7th Sunday of Easter, C – 29th May 2022 – TEST SITE

On this Sunday between Ascension and Pentecost, the liturgy reflects on events that are on the threshold between past, present and the world to come. Stephen has a vision of Christ in glory, the book of Revelation steps out of time and Jesus in the gospel selection speaks of going to the Father, yet united to his living disciples. The ‘doorways’, holding past, present and future before us is one way to live as disciples in an ever-changing world. Continue reading Scripture notes – 7th Sunday of Easter, C – 29th May 2022 – TEST SITE

Scripture notes – 4th Sunday of Lent – Year B – 14th March 2021 test site

The midpoint of Lent is called ‘Laetare Sunday’ from the Latin word ‘Rejoice’ – the opening word of today’s mass. Although ‘Joy’ may not be the first word that comes to mind in this strange second year of the pandemic, the first reading has a note of hope that after troubled times, there comes a deliverance. For Christians, there is an unfailing source of joy brought by the the love that comes from Jesus. Continue reading Scripture notes – 4th Sunday of Lent – Year B – 14th March 2021 test site

Cyclone Idai – news from on the ground

A parishioner contacted Fr William Kiowi in Mozambique whom many will remember from his time with us at St Peter’s. In his reply he said:

“Hi Lesley. Yes the situation is not good. In my parish of Sao Miguel de Cuamba many houses fell down mainly those starched houses and one of our catholic communities called Nossa Senhora Aparecida is giving accommodation to more than 70 families. I have visited the victims twice carrying a sack of rice and oil for cooking. The Capuchin Sisters also belong to the same community tried to help with maize but it is not enough, the government too is giving something little but things are not easy. In the church I tried to mobilize those who have a little bit of maize so that they could give a hand to the victims but the situation is not easy. Pray for us so that this time may pass. Greetings to all parishioners of St. Peter in Chains. Fr. William Kiowi”

The UK Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), of which CAFOD is part, has launched an appeal for the 2.6 million affected by the cyclone that swept through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. We would ask you to pray for those affected and donate what you can at https://www.dec.org.uk/ or using the box marked Cyclone Idai Appeal at the back of church. Thank you.

Lent 2019

Ecumenical Stations of the Cross – Will take place at 7:30pm, 29th March Holy Innocents Tottenham Lane, 5th April St Mary with St George, Hornsey.

Lent Family Fast Day – Thank you – to all those who gave last weekend raising, so far, over £1,100 including £132 from the Frugal Supper. You can still hand in donations at the Presbytery.

Lent 2019 Faith-sharing Groups– “Rejoice and be Glad” – You can still join a group re-discovering a profound and personal sense of being loved and of being called to love, as joyful missionary disciples of Jesus Christ. Speak to Fr Sean or email the parish office stroudgreen@rcdow.org.uk. Copies of the booklet are available on the newspaper stand priced £3.

Studying the Scripture – One good Lenten practice is Bible reading, and for those who wish to do so, a reminder that there are notes by our own scripture scholar Joan Griffith (and some good illustrations for meditation) on the parish website for the Sunday readings each week.

Grow in intimacy with God this Lent – A parishioner has trained as a Spiritual Director and is available to accompany individuals who wish to explore their relationship with God. Sessions are donation only and offer an opportunity to help you draw out a deeper relationship with God, to help you discern where God is at work in your life and to help you identify the blocks to becoming closer to God. Please contact Fr Sean for more details.

Cardinal’s Lenten Appeal 2019 – – The Cardinal’s Appeal funds initiatives in parishes, schools and charities in the three mission areas of: Marriage and Family Life, Youth and Evangelisation and the Church’s Service in Society, where, this year, he has launched a new programme focusing on the food poverty that affects so many. Much of this poverty remains hidden. Many use foodbanks even though there is a wage earner in the family. Please take a donation leaflet as you leave Mass today. In addition, to find out about volunteering opportunities, visit CardinalsLentenAppeal.org.uk. In the words of Cardinal Nichols: “I hope this Appeal offers you and your family one way in which to observe Lent and to grow in the richness of our response to God’s blessings of life and faith.” You can donate to the appeal using the box marked ‘Cardinal’s Appeal’ at the back of church.
